Former
by Hans Nielsen
Blasted Horn
About the maker:
Hans "Former" Nielsen is among Denmark's most respected carvers.
Shapewise, the pipes stamped as Handmades are more conservative than the
Freehands, but considered equally desirable. In terms of execution, Former is
one of the world's top pipe makers, and his sense of proportion is perfect.
With over four decades of experience, Former is able to produce meticulously
engineered and innovative pipes. Only the finest materials are used to
make a Former pipe and include hand picked aged briar of the highest quality,
Sterling Silver, Exotic Woods, German Ebonite, and Horn. At the age of 15,
Former started his career as a pipemaker repairing pipes for Poul Rasmussen's
Pipe Shop in Copenhagen, Denmark. After a two years repairing pipes,
Former worked with Sven Knudsen part time while retaining a machinist job.
In 1962 after his Military Service, Former went to work at the W.O. Larsen
Factory, and he quickly moved up to supervisor. He taught and worked with
many of the top Danish Carvers throughout his time at Larsen and was in charge
of quality control in the factory. Currently Former is producing his high
grade hand made pipes, and also he produces the Bently line of high grade
factory pipes with his wife Daniela.
Former's more than four decades of experience is evident in the quality of each
pipe.
The innovative design, the extraordinary finish and the detailed engineering all
guarantees a remarkable experience when smoking one of his pipes.
Former is proud and confident of his work - and he should be. Each pipe is the
best that he is capable of.
