S. Bang
Magnum Panel Horn "D"
by Per Hansen
About the maker:
The names Bang Pipes or S. Bang are a bit of a paradox in the pipemaking
world because Bang is not the name of an individual pipemaker but the name of
Svend Bang, who founded the workshop along with a pipe store in 1968. The
name of his first pipe maker is now long forgotten but in 1970 Per Hansen
started work with him and in 1971 Ulf Noltensmeier also joined.
Today it can be difficult to tell who made a specific pipe. Per and Ulf say they
are inspired by some of the old masters but what they really benefit from is
working closely together. Their grading
is based on the system that Svend Bang originally started in 1970. Since
takeover of the firm by the pipe makers in 1984, the pipes for the European
market are stamped S. BANG Kobenhavn, (Copenhagen prior to 1984) and graded:
Black blast, Tan blast, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C and, very rarely, you might find
a D. Only unique pieces are individually numbered and often stamped with the
actual pipe maker's initials (PH for Per Hansen or
UN for Ulf Noltensmeier). Bang pipes are always excellent smokers, and
they are the ultimate High Grade pipes.
Origin:
Made in Denmark
Description:
This pipe is
HUGE!!! The pipe is finished with a Golden Contrast to bring out the
intense Grains. Please take a look at all of the pictures. The
bottom and top panels show a flawless Birdseye Grain. The left panel has a
Straight Grain that flares into Birdseye. The right panel shows a stunning
Straight Grain. Although the shape of the bowl appears to be simple, it is
not. The contours are precisely symmetrical, and the bowl flows into the
shaped saddle of the stem to make the pipe appear to be one complete
piece. The pipe will balance on a flat surface with the bowl pointing
forward.
Condition:
99/100 This pipe
is in near Mint Condition.
There is only very little residues in the bowl and shank. The original
bowl coating is present, and the pipe may have been smoked only a handful of
times.
