P. Matzhold studied architecture in
Graz and worked in this profession for a couple of years. At that time he
started to carve his own pipes. Than, during a stay in Basel, he met a gallery
owner who asked him to exhibit some of his pipes. From that time on Matzhold
decided to try making his hobby his new profession. It was a good decision.
Finally the pipe smokers in Austria and Germany started watching and knowing his
work. Matzhold is now well known and respected pipe maker in Europe and
USA.
Peter Matzhold only produces "clean pipes." That means NO FILLS! A
spot or a tiny sandpit can happen sometimes and is part of the natural Briar.
His pipes are usually finished in a
light brown to orange color with a Carnauba wax coating which is polished to a
shiny glossy surface. All his mouthpieces are hand-cut and made of vulcanite.
His grading starts with A (lowest grade) and ends with G (highest grade).
Special, rare pieces are stamped Special or CU (the names of Matzhold children
are Caspar and Una).
