Joe Nelson draws inspiration for his work from a lifetime of diverse crafting experience. Before asserting himself as one of the most esteemed rising briar carvers of late, Joe's other woodworking passion has been his journey as a luthier (guitar maker), a hobby he now pairs with pipe making as full-time pursuits. One can see in his pipes an identity of strength, brought over perhaps by the resiliency and harmony required in the creation of stringed instruments. Joe's quiet modesty of his work is betrayed by its majesty, begging more questions and offering fewer answers as to the mysterious genesis of its creative and technical origins. Joe's “Old Nellie” pipes are crafted in his workshop at his home in southeastern Wisconsin, the beauty of the region showing in the tranquil elegance of his creations.
