Grunewald

Grunewald Pipes was founded in March of 2022 by pipe maker Paul Greenwood of Indiana. The brand was born from a shared passion between Paul and his son, Chris, who together attended their first pipe making seminar at the Chicago Pipe Show. What began as an introduction to the craft quickly became a focused artistic pursuit rooted in imagination, storytelling, and traditional handwork.

From the begining Paul set out to occupy a distinct niche within the artisan pipe world, fantasy inspired designs influenced by The Lord of the Rings. These early creations featured hand-cut wooden stems and evocative shaping meant to recall the rustic charm of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. This line became known as the “Shire Series,” and it remains a defining element of the brand’s identity and celebrated for its warmth, whimsy, and old-world character.

As Paul’s skills and creative interests evolved, so too did the scope of Grunewald Pipes. In the years following Paul expanded beyond fantasy motifs to include more traditional pipe forms. These designs typically incorporate classic designs, reflecting Paul’s growing command of conventional pipe aesthetics while maintaining the individuality expected of a small artisan maker.

In 2025, Paul introduced a secondary line known as “Emberling’s.” This series offers pipes that balance expressive shaping with practical, everyday smokability, and within reach of a wider audience.

Paul and Chris Greenwood remain active participants in the pipe community. Both are members of the Indiana Pipe Club, and they regularly attend pipe shows throughout the USA. Through hands on craftsmanship, community involvement, and a clear artistic vision, Grunewald Pipes continues to build a reputation as a young but distinctive voice in American artisan pipe making.
